Activities Offered by RACE
Sprint Racing
Sprint Racing is a test of pure sprint speed over a short distance. Racers are slipped, by hand or by starting box, and race in a straight line to the finish. Racers run in groups of up to four dogs at a time, and are awarded points based on how they finish. If a dog accumulates enough points then he/she can earn sprint racing championship titles. RACE hosts sprint racing events through the Large Gazehound Racing Association (LGRA) and the All Other K9 Program (AOK9).
Oval Track Racing
Oval track racing is also a test of speed, but it is also a test of strategy, Racers must navigate around an oval-shaped track to the finish line, ideally positioning themselves on the inside rail where the distance is shortest. Racers are slipped, by hand or by starting box. The track varies in length from 270 to 400 yards; the high finishers of the day are rewarded with points. If a dog accumulates enough points then he/she can earn oval racing championship titles. RACE hosts oval racing events through the All Other K9 Program (AOK9) and is in the process of becoming licensed to host events through the National Oval Track Racing Association (NOTRA).
Lure Coursing
Lure coursing is a test of total athleticism; it requires speed, stamina, and agility all in one. Courses consist of a series of straight sprints and turns that simulate the movement of a swiftly moving prey animal. The dogs are slipped by hand and are judged either by the speed at which they reach each successive turn or by subjective categories including speed, agility, stamina, desire and follow. High scoring dogs are awarded points toward field trial titles. RACE hosts lure coursing events through the National Lure Coursing Club (NLCC) and the All Other K9 Program (AOK9).
